• Holiday 2019 Events: Iconic Halls & Singular Performances

1/13/2020

-  The holidays are always hectic, and for Broken Arrow this year was happily no exception...

Events to celebrate were wonderfully diverse, starting with an other-worldly concert event at New York's Carnegie Hall by the VIENNA BOYS CHOIR.  The 25-member strong ensemble graced the world famous theatre with nothing more than their exquisite voices and grand piano for a special holiday performance, and showed the timeless approach from over 500 years from the Wiener Sangerknaben school.
#
At San Francisco's storied Swedish American Music Hall & Cafe du Nord, urban jazz harmonicist FREDERIC YONNET wowed the crowd at an annual holiday party with a great set.  This distinctive booking was a very fresh presentation for the guests and solidified the host's reputation as a music trailblazer in their events.
#
Back to New York and to a third iconic building - the New York Public Library.   Most won't equate the great, majestic building as an event space, but that was one of the many things making this night so special.  Guests viewed an original manuscript of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens upon entering the Edna Barnes Salomon Room, which was transformed from grand reading room to atmospheric event space.  To match the intellectual surroundings of the night was a mind-bending performance by mentalist ASI WIND.

Live music & performances elevate any event, and when creative bookings meet one-of-a-kind venues, event hosts are well on their way to giving their guests lifetime memories.

To all of our artists, clients and vendors, we say thanks to a great year. And now, on to 2020...!

•  Hot Concerts Heat Up Holiday Parties

- The holiday season came and went in a blur, but what a blur it was...

We had the pleasure of acquiring great live music for a variety of events.  In particular we wanted to thank LA MISA NEGRA for their irresistible sets of high-fun Afro-Latin dance jams at AT&T (now Oracle) Park in San Francisco.  A hot band on the rise, check out their new album
La Misa Negra ("the Red Album").

•
Latin orchestras are always a big hit for festive live events, and we had the pleasure of working again with one of the best, the Grammy-nominated PACIFIC MAMBO ORCHESTRA, in their full 20-piece attack.  This band is just hot, so be sure to check them out when they're back on tour.
•
Another holiday treat was  working with  DJ RED CORVETTE.  This Oakland-based DJ not only excels in prime soul/r&b/hip hop mixology, but as well in taking things to a higher level as co-founder of the Women Sound Off festival (coming up this year April 5-7 in Oakland).  At this same event from Los Angeles was GROUND CONTROL, an A-list party band that shook the house down.
•
Also, our first time at the "new" August Hall was a great success. In a historic building right off Union Square in the heart of San Francisco, the former home of Ruby Skye has been remodeled sonically and visually, and besides being a new tour stop for many, it's now a wonderful venue for private events with a great staff.

Definitely a happy holiday for all.

- San Francisco's Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park is one of the world's largest natural history museums, housing over 26 million specimens from around the world, in what is as well California's oldest museum. And on a recent memorable night, the venerable collection had a live soundtrack and private celebration well-befitting of its place and stature.

Guests to this private event had the after-hours of the museum to themselves, and once inside, the host wanted to take all on an exotic journey. Music led the way.

While exploring the Renzo Piano designed rebuild and its inhabitants, guests were serenaded by renown world music DJ
HARRY DUNCAN, who set the mood with a vibrant global-soul mix that pulsed throughout the building's sound system.  Once the special tours and presentations from astronauts, painters, and science experts were over, the crowd gathered in the expansive main piazza next to the 4-story rain forest and started moving to the afro-funk beats of African music stalwarts KOTOJA, as the 10-piece band laid down an irresistible, feel-good set.  Then, Fiji's
RAKO PASEFIKA took everyone to islands far away with their native songs & dance.

With Duncan's mixes expertly connecting the dots between live sets, the Grammy award-winning PACIFIC MAMBO ORCHESTRA took the stage 13 members strong and brought the crowd to its dancing best.  The Latin big band ignited the room with with its high energy blend of 40s - 60s golden era sounds of mambo, salsa, cha-cha, and Latin jazz.  Feet and faces alike were smiling wide from the power of the PMO.

It was a sensory, mental and physical escape for all the guests of the host, a social justice organization involved in environmental, educational and immigration issues. All under an intoxicating blend of world music sounds from Africa, Latin America, Pacific Islands,
and all points in-between.

-  On a beautiful evening in the hills above San Francisco bay, world music and dance graced an elegant yet very lively annual celebration and party...

Musically, the night began in the mountains of western Bolivia and ended in the streets of Mumbai, India. In between, the lucky guests had an entertainment tour throughout Latin America, Europe and far-flung spots along the Caribbean.

Upon arrival guests were serenaded by the incredible MARIO and JOSE ORETEA, flamenco guitar virtuosos playing traditionals from their Bolivian homeland as well as from their mentors from France, the Gypsy Kings.  The Latin jazz trio LaTiDo then took over during the catered dinner and played a wonderful set that hinted of musical journeys to come.

Bossa nova music created a sexy segue into the dance portion of the evening, which featured the RUEDA con RITMO dance group performing the "wheel" style of Cuban street dance to the music of Los Van Van.  Then a solo dance performance by YISMARI to Camila Cabello's current mega-hit "Havana" was a show-stopper.  Increasing the energy, the CANDELA salsa orchestra immediately lit into their fiery set and guests quickly jammed the dance floor, and stayed there.  Guests only thought they were danced-out after Candela's last song... but once led inside, JEFFREY IQBAL hit them with big, India/Bollywood-style pop hits, and more dancing and fun were unavoidable.

In all, the exquisite setting and event were truly graced by an entire evening of fantastic live music and dance performances from around the world.

- Ideators came together for two days and nights in San Francisco recently for the annual Ignite conference by Spigit.  Spigit is an industry leading ideation management platform, with offices in San Francisco, London and Sydney.  Ignite 2018 landed at the stately Battery building in downtown SF and featured an A-list group of speakers and of course, entertainers.

Elevating the opening reception was the exquisite guitar stylings of PAUL MEHLING, the godfather of American gypsy jazz, and leader of the Hot Club of San Francisco.  Following up at the closing party was the equally-exquisite jazz guitar of JORDAN SAMUELS, who regularly performs with the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra and other top ensembles, as well as his own trio.

Both artists brought a large amount of talent, creativity and distinction...and a lot of fun, to the social nights of Ignite 18.  Well done to all.

- The Sound of Rock pervaded Las Vegas and the mammoth Consumer Electronics tradeshow with an all-star private concert headlined by famed AEROSMITH guitarist-extraordinaire JOE PERRY.

Joining Perry at the Brooklyn Bowl were ROBIN ZANDER of CHEAP TRICK, GARY CHERONE of EXTREME & VAN HALEN, and the DeLEO BROTHERS of the STONE TEMPLE PILOTS.  The band blazed through a 17-song set including Aerosmith classics "Toys in the Attic" and "Walk This Way".  The band also hit "Aye, Aye, Aye", the Zander-sung lead single to Perry's new solo release Sweetzerland Manifesto.

CES attracted over 184,000 attendees, but only a couple thousand received the special invitation to the private show, which promoted Perry's new line of products with Monster, Inc. The concert quickly became the talk of the convention and the exposure it brought to the product introduction was priceless. It was a home run for the band, the corporate hosts, and most of all, the fans!

- For over 100 years, the National Geographic Society has annually honored the years’ greatest exploration and scientific achievements.  When you have past honorees such as Charles Lindbergh, John Glenn, Louis and Mary Leakey and Neil Armstrong, you know that this is no ordinary awards show...

For 2017, the National Geographic Awards night culminated their “Celebration of Exploration” week in Washington, D.C., which featured many singular events throughout. Held at the Lisner Auditorium, itself a national landmark at George Washington University, National Geographic awarded the Hubbard Medal (their highest honor) to NEIL deGRASSE TYSON, and BERTRAND PICCARD and ANDRÉ BORSCHBERG, co-founders & pilots of the Solar Impulse – the first around-the-world solar flight – were awarded the prestigious Further Award.

For such a special year for the awards, National Geographic wanted to introduce a live musical element that would distinguish the event from years’ past.  For that, and in harmony with the company’s worldwide appeal and respect, Broken Arrow brought in multiple Grammy-award winner INDIA.ARIE to headline and perform the opening and closing numbers. Her exquisite performances gave the year’s greatest global achievements the perfect soundtrack, and elevated the evening into anotherfar-reaching and resplendent Geographic photograph.

Hosting the evening was CBS Sunday Morning mainstay MO ROCCA, and SAM HARRIS of X AMBASSADORS also performed. Presenters included JAMES CAMERON and JASON SILVA.

Congratulations to all, and thank you for taking us Further.

- On a beautiful afternoon on the equally beautiful campus of Pixar Animation Studios,
MATT JAFFE & THE DISTRACTIONS brought the electricity to a food truck-ringed outdoor festival, as the young power-pop trio rocked College Track’s annual
benefit of 2017.

College Track is a nonprofit public benefit corporation whose mission is to “empower students from underserved communities to graduate from college”.  The comprehensive ten-year program founded by Laurene Powell Jobs and Carlos Watson, works with students from before high school through college graduation, providing academic support, leadership training, financial advising and scholarships.  Among their many supporters are will.i.am, Mariah Carey, Kevin Hart, Tim Cook and Jamie Fox.

The Distractions, fittingly enough in the same age group as the students of College Track, are fast becoming known in their own right, sharing stages so far with the likes of Wilco, Mavis Staples and Chuck Prophet.  But tonight, they were the headliner, along with the great accomplishments from the kids of College Track.

- Leading into Earth Day, Emerson Collective, a social impact organization headed by Laurene Powell Jobs, brought together a few hundred special guests, including former Secretary of State John Kerry, to celebrate the launch of their new environmental philanthropy and advocacy arm and a new partnership with a clean energy incubator.

Highlighting the evening was the appointment of their first fellow, Dr. Ernest J. Moniz, former Secretary of Energy under President Obama, who will work with Emerson on community  issues created by moving to a low carbon energy future.

To distinctively transition the opening reception into the main event - a fireside chat between Dr. Moniz and Andy Karsner, Managing Partner of Emerson and former climate negotiator and policymaker -
BROKEN ARROW brought in the singular talents of Hang master KEVIN KIHARA. Kihara exhibited the cultural and community elements evident within Emerson’s objectives, and the exotic sounds of the Hang - an inverted steel resonator - gave the crowd a perfect Earth Day audio trip into nature that undoubtedly had been unheard by most.

Kihara performed solo and was then joined by Hawaii Poet Laureate KEALOHA
for a unique collaboration of spoken word and hang.  In all, a great beginning to a wonderful cause.

- Broken Arrow was honored to be involved with Events for Change for Pachamama Alliances’ big 20th Anniversary celebration at Fort Mason Pavilion in San Francisco.  Pachamama ("mother Earth") nonprofit is a global community protecting and preserving indigenous peoples & lands with roots in the deep Amazon rainforest and the Achuar people.
A wonderful cause that has made a difference.

Highlights of the evening included a dinner from Taste Catering, talks from some of the leaders of the Achuar people, a showcase of accomplishments, and a big blowout dance-concert by
EDGARDO CAMBON and CANDELA.  Led by the Uruguayan Cambon, Candela was the ideal choice for the evening, as they beautifully delivered Cumbia, Bachata, Candombe, Salsa, Samba and other Latin music styles, perfectly soundtracking the full South American heritage of Pachamama.

Congratulations to Pachamama and continued success for the next 20 years.

•  Rob Garza of Thievery Corp. Elevates Singularity Summit

- Singularity University aims big, to say the least.

As a Silicon Valley-based think tank/incubator/educational benefit (B) corp., it focuses on utilizing cutting-edge technologies to find global solutions to humanity's critical issues.  It was founded in 2008 by noted futurist Ray Kurzweil and X Prize founder & VC Peter Diamandis at the NASA Research Park in order to grow a community of global change makers to take on the task...

So when they decided to host their first global summit, it had to be extraordinary.  The exclamation point was to be a nighttime celebration and party designed to take the summit to the next level.

And that it did.  Broken Arrow brought in ROB GARZA of THIEVERY CORPORATION to headline a special night for the conference guests at an industrial offsite location.  The critically and universally popular DJ tandem was in the midst of their own worldwide 20th Anniversary Tour when Rob broke away to lay down an ultra-delicious groove-heavy mix in front of a 70-foot video wall for the futurists, many of which were huge fans of Thievery.

Guests also enjoyed a silent disco mix competition between 3 other local DJs in a downstairs lounge, and perhaps best of all, no speeches!  Just fun, dancing, eating and chilling to celebrate the success of this unique difference maker.  Beautifully produced by e2k with great audio/video support from Madrone Studios.

- Oakland based nonprofit Grid Alternatives celebrated its 11th year in providing solar electricity to low-income families and disadvantaged communities with a party and fundraiser that overtook the Terra Gallery building in San Francisco.  The night also honored California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León and Enphase CEO Paul Nahi.

Giving the night a beautiful and very distinctive musical atmosphere, the new duet
STEEL & STRING, featuring Kevin Kihara on the hang (a derivative of a steelpan that acts partly as a  Helmholz resonator) and MJ Lee on the violin, was brought in by Broken Arrow.  Based out of Grid's home territory, Steel & String was a perfect cultural and program fit for the night, helping to soundtrack Grid Alternatives' singular mission that is now spreading to many states, Native American lands, and on to Central America.

Congratulations Grid and keep up the good work!

-  Broken Arrow was part of the first solar installation to take place under a new program sponsored by FACEBOOK and Bay area nonprofits MENLO SPARK and GRID ALTERNATIVES.

The collaboration will initially provide 10 low-income houses in Menlo Park’s Belle Haven neighborhood with solar electricity.  It is estimated the program will save the families an estimated $250,000 over the next 25 years and prevent an estimated 550 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

For the first house, a 4.2 kW system was installed using Sun Edison panels and Enphase micro-inverters.  Grid Alternatives installed the system with additional cost assistance from the California Public Utilities Commission’s Single Family Affordable Homes Program.  The installation will offset 41.23 tons of carbon, the equivalent of planting 969 trees, and will save the homeowner an estimated $20,000 over the system’s lifetime.

Facebook, which is headquartered in Menlo Park, is the town’s largest employer and sees the program as a way to improve its immediate neighborhood in the same way it is addressing it’s global corporate carbon footprint.  Menlo Spark is a local nonprofit committed to a carbon free Menlo Park, and Oakland’s Grid Alternatives provides solar installations for low-income housing in 9 states as well as in Nicaragua.

- The NHL has hit a gold mine with their now-annual outdoor Stadium Series games, and this year's version at Denver's Coors Field was electric, featuring heavy hitters both on the ice and on the stage.

The 2016 Coors LIght Stadium Series was the first time the event was held in Denver, and it featured the Avalanche hosting long-time rivals the Detroit Red Wings.  The buildup and game took over the town and sold out the 50,000 + seat stadium.  As well the Saturday night prime-time affair was nationally televised by NBC and throughout Canada on CBC and TVA (French).

Kicking off the night, ANDY GRAMMER brought his high-energy show to the custom designed stage with a set that included his mega-hits "Keep Your Head Up," "Honey I'm Good" and "Good to be Alive."  AMBER RILEY,  fresh from her live TV performance in The Wiz, sang the national anthem as Air Force F-16s flew overhead.  The entertainment reached its peak at the first intermission, where headliner and Denver's own THE FRAY took command with their hits "Cable Car," "You Found Me" and "Love Don't Die," accompanied by an amazing laser light show and pyrotechnics.

The NFL pulled out all the stops for their golden Super Bowl anniversary in San Francisco, with a host of events the week leading up to the game.  One of the most memorable and  to toast their own, the 32 NFL team owners held their annual private dinner at SF's iconic City Hall, and were given a night to remember.

The owners were treated to a cocktail hour upon arrival and were able to gaze at all 5 San Francisco 49er Super Bowl trophies, as well as at an exhibit featuring all previous 49 Super Bowl championship rings.  The EDWARD SIMON TRIO laid down some heavy jazz, fresh off an afternoon rehearsal session for Terence Blanchard's upcoming SF Jazz production "Champion: An Opera in Jazz".  Then a dinner in the grand rotunda catered by THOMAS KELLER (The French Laundry, Napa; Per Se, NY), the only American chef to have been awarded simultaneous three star Michelin ratings for two separate restaurants, with the DICK BRIGHT ORCHESTRA  serenading the crowd at the top of the grand staircase.  As well comedian AL MADRIGAL (Jon Stewart's Daily Show) kept things lively with a hilarious set during the feast.

But it was the afterparty where the night took off with a surprise set by the STEVE MILLER BAND.
Miller, who has his own great history with San Francisco, had just been voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Miller hit many of his classic songs along with some blistering blues journeys, all accompanied by his singular and timeless vocals.  In an intimate setting, created by Stanlee Gatti, it was the perfect high energy launch into Super Bowl weekend.

Sometimes after the holidays are over, one just needs… a big holiday party.  That’s exactly how Microsoft’s employees unwound with a big show and night in January at San Francisco’s iconic Legion of Honor museum.  The Microsoft Holiday Party 2016 had the run of the entire museum which majestically sits on a bluff overlooking Lincoln Park and the Golden Gate Bridge.  Along with the museum itself, the night featured a comedy show, DJ sets, global food stations and a live set all geared to celebrate Microsoft’s 40th anniversary and employees.

A full-sized bronze cast of Rodin’s The Thinker oversaw the main party space in the Court of Honor, where to cap off the evening, Broken Arrow brought in the 8-piece POP FICTION to roar non-stop through pop hits of the past 4 decades of Microsoft’s life.  It was a great way to experience the past 40 years and the band, with female and male lead vocalists, nailed a whirlwind of timeless hits.

Prior to the final concert, guests were entertained in the museum theater by comedian ANISH SHAH, and DJ AMY warmed up the crowd for POP FICTION.  Stellar production of the night was by e2k events

-  Over 250 mayors from around the country visited San Francisco and were treated to over-the-top entertainment during their stay.  The opening night private gala was set in the main rotunda of the iconic, Beaux-Arts style San Francisco City Hall, and featured Bay area artists and themes.  Highlights were many, but definitely included first-time collaborations between PATTI AUSTIN and the 100-strong SAN FRANCISCO GAY MENS CHORUS for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”; the legendary KRONOS QUARTET playing a very avant-garde classical version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” while renown puppeteer and performance artist BASIL TWIST’s creations danced and cascaded down from the top of the inner dome; JOHN FOGERTY singing “(Sittin on) the Dock of the Bay” in concert for the first time in his storied career, just by himself on acoustic guitar; intimate jazz rooms with the MARCUS SHELBY QUARTET and EDWARD SIMON of the San Francisco Jazz Collective, and the DICK BRIGHT ORCHESTRA keeping the joint jumping from the top of the grand staircase throughout the evening.

The mayors were sent off with a show-stopping version of “San Francisco” by local stage heroes BEACH BLANKET BABYLON, with all the night’s entertainers joining in.  A bagpiper then led the mayors outside into a VIP viewing area to see a fantastic laser light show on City Hall’s exterior by Obscura Digital, which depicted the last 100 years in history since City Hall had been rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake.

If the opening night gala wasn’t enough... three more power-packed nights awaited the mayors, including an international food and entertainment night at the incredible Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, with african music stalwarts KOTOJA and the PETE ESCOVEDO Latin Jazz Orchestra providing non-stop global grooves.

All in all, these amazing and diverse Bay area talents provided a singular soundtrack for San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee to showcase his city as host to our nations mayors.

-  Music legend JOHN FOGERTY was the featured performer at the 2015 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.  Broken Arrow brought in the Bay area icon to play during intermission to a sell-out crowd of almost 70,000 people, and to a national TV audience on NBC Sports Network and throughout Canada on CBC and TVA2 networks.

Fogerty rocked the night with a power-blast of hits, including a fireworks and laser-studded medley of "Fortunate Son", "Proud Mary" and "Born on the Bayou."  The set was a galvanizing halftime feature for the NHL and networks, and as well served as a big promotion to Fogerty and his upcoming summer tour "1969", which will commemorate the year of three of Creedence Clearwater's greatest album releases.

Also on the entertainment bill were former American Idol winner KRIS ALLEN singing the national anthem, and MELISSA ETHERIDGE performing solo during the second intermission.  The performances and audience experience were produced by e2k Events x Entertainment.
